Workshops enable teams to work swiftly, share their views and make decisions that stick. And usually have a lot of fun in the process.

How it works

Workshops should be attended by key representatives from across your whole team, including business owners, marketers, project managers, designers, copy writers and developers. Exactly who is needed depends on the context. A mix of disciplines will usually get the best result.

Typical workshop activities include:

  • Presentations: Including results from usability tests or ethnographic research.
  • Games and brainstorming: To generate concepts, personas and scenarios takes real creativity, and there's no process for that. Flow stimulates creativity by providing games, tasks and a great environment for being playful.
  • Affinity sorting: Grouping and sorting sticky notes, photos and sketches helps the group work together in a balanced way – and delivers amazing results.
  • Sketching: Getting the team to sketch interface ideas and workflows is the best way to make sure that everyone really agrees the design approach.
  • Breakout and report back: Attendees can work in smaller groups to deliver pieces of a larger solution, or different views on the same issue.

Typically, a Flow user-centred design (UCD) workshop will focus on one of these areas:

  • User experience strategy: Review research and agree a strategy for driving business growth through improved customer experience.
  • Personas and goals: Define target users to promote consensus and drive design.
  • Concept design: Brainstorm and select innovative solutions, based on user research.
  • Interaction design: Create and refine detailed prototypes and manage the feature list.
  • Usability debrief and design: Review usability test results and solve design problems.

Workshops can take from half a day to as much as a whole week. Not all attendees need to be present all the time. Longer workshops can seem like a major investment of time, but our clients tell us they deliver amazing results in record time.
